Roosevelt Campobello International Park Announces Official Opening of the Witapehkewakoni-Awt / Friendship Trail
CAMPOBELLO ISLAND, NB — Roosevelt Campobello International Park Commission is proud to announce the official opening of its newest and most ambitious project — the Witapehkewakoni-Awt / Friendship Trail — with a public celebration on Saturday, June 28, 2025.
The name Witapehkewakoni-Awt, meaning “Friendship Trail,” was gifted by the Peskotomuhkati Nation. It reflects the spirit of friendship, reconciliation, and cross-border cooperation that defines the Park.
The opening event will be held at Adams Lodge, starting at 11:00 AM (AT), and is open to the public. The program features special guest remarks, a commemorative tree planting, a video presentation highlighting the trail’s unique floating design, and a buffet luncheon. Guided visits to the trail will run from 1:30 to 4:30 PM (AT).
Constructed with environmentally sensitive engineering, the trail’s elevated floating design protects the Park’s fragile bog and wetland ecosystem, offering visitors an immersive experience through one of the region’s most unique landscapes.
The Park encourages everyone to attend and suggests arriving early, as space for the luncheon is limited.
“Join us on the Witapehkewakoni-Awt (Friendship Trail) and participate in this incredible journey to honour, preserve, and celebrate the shared heritage and friendship between Canada and the United States. With interpretive features, breathtaking views, and a commitment to environmental stewardship, the Friendship Trail invites all to explore, reflect, and celebrate our enduring friendship.”
— Executive Director/Superintendent, Jon Southern
