International Engineering Landmark to Be Unveiled at Roosevelt Campobello International Park
ASCE/CSCE Plaque Installation to Recognize Historic Canada–United States International Boundary Survey
CAMPOBELLO ISLAND, N.B. — August 13, 2026 — Roosevelt Campobello International Park is honoured to host the installation of an American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark and Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE) National Historic Civil Engineering Site plaque at Mulholland Point Lighthouse on Saturday, August 22, 2026 at 2:00pm(AT).
The designation recognizes the remarkable achievement of the United States–Canada International Boundary Survey, one of the most significant and enduring examples of international civil engineering cooperation in North America.
Following a two-year nomination process led by a joint ASCE/CSCE task group, the designation was approved by the ASCE History and Heritage Committee and the CSCE National History Committee and ratified by the Boards of Directors of both organizations in 2025.
The initiative to recognize the International Boundary Survey originated in 2023 through a group of professional surveyors in the Pacific Northwest who recognized the historic engineering significance of the survey that established and continues to define the world's longest international boundary. The nomination was developed collaboratively by experts from both Canada and the United States, reflecting the same spirit of cooperation that characterized the original survey itself.
Roosevelt Campobello International Park was selected as one of a limited number of commemorative sites along the Canada–United States border because of the unique significance of Mulholland Point. Located beside the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial Bridge and at the easternmost land crossing of the international boundary, the site provides a fitting and highly visible location to commemorate this shared engineering achievement.
The placement of the plaque also complements the Park's unique international character. Established through the 1964 Agreement between the Governments of Canada and the United States, Roosevelt Campobello International Park stands as a living symbol of friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
The designation provides an opportunity to expand the Park's interpretation of the history of the international boundary survey, the engineering expertise that made it possible, and the generations of surveyors, engineers and governments that have worked together to maintain this shared international boundary.
The plaque serves as a lasting reminder that the Canada–United States boundary is not simply a line separating two countries, but a testament to more than two centuries of peaceful cooperation, diplomacy and mutual trust. It reflects the same values that have defined Roosevelt Campobello International Park since its creation -- unity, friendship and mutual respect -- and celebrates the enduring partnership between two neighbouring nations.
The August 22 ceremony will bring together representatives of ASCE, CSCE, the surveying profession, Roosevelt Campobello International Park and guests to commemorate the designation and unveil the plaque.
