<image:caption>The Park operates the Marine Life Interpretation Centre, located at Mulholland Point Lighthouse, in partnership with the Canadian Whale Institute. The centre aims to provide education on North Atlantic right whale biology, research and conservation, as well as local marine life on the Bay of Fundy shore. When open, the centre is hosted by RCIP interpretive staff. <image:caption>The Park's hiking and cycling trails wind through varied habitats including spruce-fir and hardwood forests, sphagnum bogs, fields, and the seashore. The trails are designed to offer short, moderate, or long hikes or bike rides when travelled in combination. Trail surfaces vary from packed gravel (suitable for cycling) to woodland trails, boardwalks, and sand or cobble beaches. Discretion is advised for those with small children, as some trails are located near high cliffs and ledges. Footwear for wet and slippery conditions is always recommended. <image:title>Points of Interest - Carriage Roads and Drives</image:title>
<image:caption>The Park's gravel roads offer you an experience similar to that enjoyed by the Roosevelt family when they came to Campobello. There are a variety of scenic views as you drive or bike along soft and hardwood forests, saltwater coves, sand and gravel beaches, cliffs, offshore islands, and an array of migratory birds and wildlife. Vegetation is allowed to remain close to the road to retain the original character of the drives. Please note the carriage roads are not suitable for campers, buses, or recreational vehicles.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Points of Interest - Grounds and Gardens</image:title>
<image:caption>Beds of annuals, perennials, and, always a favourite, dahlias are admired by many Park visitors. Park gardens are planted to peak from mid-July and throughout August - the height of our visitor season. Many plants bloom earlier, and the gardens are worth a look in late-September and early-October when the dahlias are at their best. The designs of our gardens are not historically accurate and are not interpreted as such. The gardens do, however, contain many plants that would have been found in cottage gardens of the Roosevelt era.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Points of Interest - SunSweep (Sculpture)</image:title>
<image:caption>SunSweep is an international art project spanning 1,722 kilometers adjoining the US/Canada border and finished in November 1985 by Michigan artist David Barr. SunSweep consists of carved granite sculptures conceived for three sites: Roosevelt Campobello International Park, New Brunswick; American Point Island, Lake-of-the-Woods, Minnesota; Boundary Bluff, Point Roberts, Washington. Borders are equivocal things. They separate people, marking a clear delineation of responsibility. Yet they mark a connection, a shared interest. Barr explores the area of this ambiguity by installing polished granite markers at three sites along the US/Canadian border. Because this long, quiet border lies under the path of the sun as it moves from east to west, Barr’s work is called SunSweep. The most eastern marker is within the Park on Campobello Island. The handprints etched on the stones are the universal sign for “I was here”, found in First Nations art, both recent and ancient. Drive the Park’s well-maintained gravel carriage roads to Liberty Point. From there, you will hike along the coastline and through the forest to Ragged Point, where you will find situated within a panoramic view of the Bay of Fundy, SunSweep sculpture… where art, culture, history, and nature intertwine. Tip: Grab a picnic blanket and lunch before you go for a beautiful and unique dining experience.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Roosevelts on Campobello - Summer Colony</image:title>
<image:caption>During the 1880s, wealthy people had extensive leisure time and the means to enjoy it. They sought out seaside resorts to escape the heat of pre-air conditioning cities. In 1881, most of the southern portion of Campobello Island was acquired by a consortium of Boston and New York businessmen who, intending to develop the area as a fashionable resort, constructed three luxurious hotels. Canadian and American press touted the favorable climate, the clean, bracing, salt-tinged, balsam-scented air, and the abundant scenic beauty. Brochures also espoused unequaled boating (sailboats, rowing, canoes with Peskotomukahti (Passamaquoddy) guides), enjoyable excursions by land and sea, and relief from hay fever. Families from New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Ottawa, and Montreal came to Campobello’s hotels by private yacht, steamship, and train for extended summer vacations. Several of the families, including Franklin Roosevelt’s parents, James and Sara Roosevelt, liked the area so much that they purchased land. They then either refurbished existing houses or built new, large “cottages”. At left, the Tyn-Y-Maes hotel, 1881.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Roosevelts on Campobello - A Family Summer Retreat</image:title>
<image:caption>Young Franklin Roosevelt’s parents were among those who summered at Campobello’s hotels and who purchased land and built a cottage. With his parents, he spent many enjoyable summers on this small Canadian island in the Bay of Fundy. His parents, and later he, his wife Eleanor, and their children were attracted to Campobello Island for the ample opportunities for outdoor recreation. As a young father, FDR found that his family enjoyed Campobello and it became customary to spend July, August, and part of September there. Over the summers, the energetic, athletic father taught his children sailing and many other pastimes he had learned there during his childhood. Campobello became as much a part of the lives of his family as it had been of his. At right, young Franklin Roosevelt with his parents, James and Sara, at their summer cottage in 1900.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Roosevelts on Campobello - The Roosevelt Cottage</image:title>
<image:caption>The cottage neighbouring James and Sara Roosevelt’s cottage was owned by Mrs. Grace Kuhn, a family friend of the Roosevelts. After Mrs. Kuhn’s passing in 1908, Sara Delano Roosevelt purchased the red summer home as a belated wedding gift for Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and their growing family. The young Roosevelt family visited often. Sailing was the most important part of the Campobello summer. The Roosevelts enjoyed both day-sailing, often picnicking on nearby islands, and cruising, taking three and four-day trips around Passamaquoddy Bay, up to St. Andrews, or along the Maine coast. Although FDR's growing political responsibilities and health problems eventually limited his visits to Campobello, his love of the island and his long associations with its people left a lasting impression. After he became President, FDR returned to his summer home for three brief visits: in 1933, 1936, and 1939. Eleanor returned with the children and two of her friends in the summer of 1925 and again in 1933, 35 and 36. At left, the Roosevelt family on the porch of the Roosevelt Cottage, 1920. <image:title>About the Park - Creation of the Park</image:title>
<image:caption>After President Roosevelt’s death in 1945, the Roosevelt Cottage fell into disrepair. In 1951, the family sold their property on Campobello Island to the Hammer Brothers, wealthy New York art gallery owners and business tycoons. The first floor of the cottage was opened as an “F.D.R. Museum”, and admission was charged. By 1957, the Hammer brothers began to lobby senators and congressmen for the creation of an international park, and the transfer of the Campobello Island properties to the Roosevelt Campobello International Park Commission was completed in August of 1964. The Park was opened on August 20, 1964, with Mrs. Maryon Pearson and Mrs. Lady Bird Johnson in attendance. The Park is jointly owned and managed by both Canada and the United States, created by a treaty that honors the memory of Franklin D. Roosevelt and the legacy of friendship between the two countries. At left, Eleanor Roosevelt’s last visit to the Roosevelt Cottage, in 1962.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About the Park - Administration and Funding</image:title>
<image:caption>Roosevelt Campobello International Park is administered by a commission created under an international treaty signed by Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson and President Lyndon B. Johnson on January 22, 1964. Comprised of six members and six alternate members, the Roosevelt Campobello International Park Commission has equal representation from Canada and the United States. Under the international treaty, the Commission was charged to take the necessary measures to restore the Roosevelt home as closely as possible to its condition when it was occupied by President Roosevelt and to administer the Park as a memorial. The treaty specifies that the two countries share equally in the costs of the development, operation, and maintenance of the Park. Day-to-day management of the Park is the responsibility of a Superintendent, appointed by the Park Commission. Roosevelt Campobello International Park is the only park in the world jointly managed, staffed, and owned by the peoples of two countries and administered by a joint commission in their name.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About the Park - A Living Memorial</image:title>
<image:caption>Former U.S. Secretary of State, Senator from Maine, Governor of Maine, and Park Commission member Edmund S. Muskie said it best: “Campobello - ...air so crisp one can almost shape it, so heady that to breathe it is intoxicating. ...Soft meadows and glowing woods, ... vistas that embrace the solidity of the coast and the exuberance of open water. ... sudden coves, weathered piers, the look of endurance and the evidence of man's enduring. When Franklin Delano Roosevelt, in whose memory the Park was created, came to Campobello as a child, it was to pursue the orderly summer adventures available to a well-to-do Victorian family. When he came as a young husband, whose third son was born on the island, it was to taste the excitements of childhood from the perspective of manhood and to pass on to his children the same challenges and rewards he had known. And finally, when he came as President of the United States, it was to take new strength and composure from Campobello's air and land, from the sea around it, and from the memories of ease his "beloved island" awoke in him. In the 2,600 acres of the Park at the southeast end of Campobello Island, more that a memory is preserved. The Roosevelt "cottage" is there, the simple wicker furniture and the knick-knacks of a summer home. But beyond the gardens are the bogs and the fog forests, the bays and shoals - all the natural beauties the Roosevelt family knew - protected now for others to enjoy. Although isolated by geography, [Campobello] has entered the lives of two nations as a place to invite any soul and to refresh any weariness with a sense of continuity and endeavour. The Roosevelt Campobello International Park... translates all the meanings Campobello had for President Roosevelt into a living memorial. Here we remember the man and his work, his vigour and his leisure. The ... Park ...is Canadian soil which has become part of America's heritage and which is being preserved for the future through the commitment of the citizens and governments of both countries.”</image:caption>
